NPS Watchman and Temple of Sinawava Comfort Stations

Zion National Park, Utah

E-Corp designed and constructed two comfort stations to meet LEED® Silver and Gold standards. For the Watchman Campground comfort station, E-Corp worked around tourists and campers. The Watchman Campground turned out to be on swampland, requiring us to excavate and bring in fill to rebuild the land. Once the land was stable, we were able to complete construction. The Temple of Sinawava site did not have any power, which posed a challenge. We had to use generator power as well as hydraulic and powerless heating and equipment. Both comfort stations were located at remote sites.

Construction included the following sustainable components:

  • Recycled floors and wainscot
  • 100 percent recycled glass tile
  • 100 percent recycled glass countertops
  • Low emitting materials such as paints, adhesives, and sealants
  • Up to 90 percent-certified wood, siding, beams, windows, and cementations fiber board lapped siding
  • Composite shingles
  • Natural sandstone veneer
  • Energy-efficiency light fixtures and hand dryers
  • Solar tube skylights
  • Recycled demolition materials from the old comfort station at the Temple of Sinawava such as sinks, toilets, partitions, paper dispensers, etc.
